Steps to Remove an Elgin Watch Crystal
It is a simple procedure to remove the crystal from an older or vintage Elgin wristwatch. While removing the crystal from a late-model or new Elgin watch is not an easy case as it requires special tools and the skill of a watchmaker.

Step 1

Place your fingertips around the bezel of the Elgin watch. Rotate the bezel counterclockwise until it is free from the watch case.

Step 2

Use a rubber jar opener or a rubber cleaning glove to rotate a stubborn bezel. The bezel should be free of the case after about a half-dozen rotations.

Step 3

Insert a fingernail under the crystal and pop it from the case. The crystal should pop off easily. Some crystals on vintage watches may be secured with a small amount of plastic or rubber cement or glue. Gently work the crystal from the case with your fingernail or blunt case blade.

Step 4

Don't touch the dial with your fingers instead use a blower to remove dust and dirt from the dial. Use the kind of blower that can be squeezed to expel air, which typically used to clean a camera lens..

Step 5

Place in the new crystal. First dab a small amount of rubber cement on the inside edges of the crystal and then place it on the case. Screw down the bezel into place with your fingertips. Make sure it's tight, but take care not to strip the threads.
